Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Personally I think the older one is, the more impressive it is. Having the confidence to be a dork in public is quite an achievement, as most of us know from an early age that such displays are to be scorned and ridiculed.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Did an online coding interview today. First time I've done something like that. It's weird because the kinds of questions they ask are like doing a coding exam at university - more to show off coding skills than anything related to my 12 years of employment. Guess I'll find out if my results* are go...

Re: Alien 5

I think the problem of Prometheus and Alien Covenant was that people were expecting them to be alien films. And as much as I enjoyed those films, their weakest moments were when they did the alien-like sequences. But I guess that's part of the problem with trying to tap into that fictional world - t...

Re: What are you watching?

Watched the first episode of You, and couldn't stand the narration.

I also started Sex Education, and I've enjoyed that so far. Gillian Anderson makes every show better!

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

I did the maths for what it would cost us to pay rent in an apartment versus the deprecating value, and I worked out that even if the apartment's value drops 40% in 10 years, we'd have still been better off buying than to continue renting. Because either way you've got to pay to live. Though I keep ...

Here's hoping there's not a blackout tomorrow when it gets to 39. The heat is tolerable so long as I'm indoors in an air conditioned room.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Suppose it depends on the asking of billable hours in the year. It's good money, but if you're only busy part of the day, of the week, or of the year, then the number needs to be that high to have a liveable wage. A workaholic in an area with high demand and low supply would be raking it in, but I c...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

On a side note, I've never understood why people complain about tradies and how much they make. A skill is a skill, and anyone can in theory take up the skill themselves. Supply and demand is economics 101.

Re: Planet Trump

The thing I'm unsure about is the extent to which fast food pervades the American diet. I can see it going either way, really, with it either being a good egalitarian gesture that would fit with what they normally eat (this is Trump's diet too after all), or seen as wholly inappropriate given the fo...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Worst time of year for it to happen - hopefully you can get someone to repair / replace it quickly. When it happened to us a few years ago, it took 2 months until our landlord could get someone in to repair it.

Re: Planet Trump

China banned Winnie the Pooh from social media as its citizens were using it to make fun of their dear Supreme leader. Trump's an embarrassment, sure, but he's still bound by the liberal democratic system he finds himself in. He can't wield power the way Xi or Putin do. He can say fake news, but can...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

The mission of Centrelink is to limit the amount of welfare it pays out. A huge amount of bureaucratic processing goes into this, so it's only fair to conclude it's by design than process. The only exception to this is the Old Age Pension. In between, you're a freeloader trying to scam the taxpayers...

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts

Interview didn't go terribly, though I could have done better on the coding portion of the interview. Just waiting now for the "thanks but no thanks" email. What was cool, though, was the job prospect finally compelled me to look into Big Data, and that's been really interesting. Gonna keep on with ...

The chorizo to vegetable ratio is too high, but I'm otherwise happy with how it came out.

Trying out Bodyguard on Netflix, which so far seems a good counterpart to Homeland and Greyzone.
