Hi there!
Is this forum still current?
Or is everyone just having a snooze?
I just updated my sig and avatar because photobucket wants me to pay for my account now and had blocked all my images... alas they can get stuffed.

Re: Windows 7 End of Life Support
Can you still update your Win 7 PC manually up to that date after the deadline :?: How long will the activation servers continue to run? I'm not going to Win 10 on all my systems, I'm currently in the process of moving all my systems except my new laptop (which unfortunately has Win 10) to Linux... ...

Re: The NBN thread
For a long time I was on ADSL2+ and it sucked... hard, my fastest download speed was 700kb/s. When I went on a trip I bought and used a 4G modem with SIM on the Amaysim/Optus network and it was wonderful downloading files at 4 - 6MB/s and great ping for gaming... came home to the NBN rollover and it...

Apologies
I have not been on in ages... I had lost the bookmark as my old PC coming on 10 years of ages is dying and being just SO pissed off with Windows I have now gone to Ubuntu 16.04 completely on my new system. I hope you have all missed me :!:  If you haven't, then http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/funn...

Re: Random USB issue
Heh, I encountered an issue like this on an old system that I finally got around to setting up. Apparently on this Gigabyte motherboard I have the USB ports do not work whilst installing Windows, until I install the chipset drivers after installing Windows... the USB ports work to access BIOS. This ...

Do you need a soundbar or speakers:?:
Currently I use Divoom Iris-02 on my HDD recorder to playback music at about 50% and find them plenty loud enough, with quality sound.
I bought mine from JB Hifi for $11 years ago... I dunno if they are still available or not...

Re: Advice on what is salvagable
Yeah - learnt my lesson there - full sized ATX next time :P The ASRock Z77 Extreme4 was advertised as ATX but is actually cut down and misses the front-most lugs so you have to be careful to support the board and not apply too much force when inserting and removing the 24 pin motherboard power conn...

Re: Advice on what is salvagable
Well the system I am currently on is an ASUS 9 years old with solid caps, it has outlasted 8 Asrock motherboards, 1 MSI and 1 Gigabyte board thus far... you ask what problem I had with the Asrock boards is that they all cooked themselves specifically around the north/south bridges, no idea why. Seve...

Re: Advice on what is salvagable
Yeah you gotta be sure you get one that has solid caps and pcie 3.0, some of the boards use electrolytic caps and have only pcie 2.0, I looked up some reviews on your current motherboard which is why I am suggesting to replace it, that and the fact I've grown to loathe Asrock... Now is not a really ...

Re: Advice on what is salvagable
Apparently, alot of the newer CPU's on the market of late are not supported natively by the motherboards you can buy, unless you flash the BIOS. AMD at least offers a Short Term Processor Loan "Boot Kit" if you get caught out, but with Intel boards I think you need to buy CPU/RAM/Motherboard from a ...

Re: The NBN thread
I was reading something the other day about modem's needing to meet some sort of certification to be used, apparently you can buy modem's that are not the standard per say and your ISP may cut you off. I cannot find my way back to the article in question... do you guys know anything about it

I am considering to get a fritzbox! getting ready for NBN which supposedly gets to me in October, I wish 5G would get here 1st as I may be more likely to go to it depending on the cost of the plans.
I just had a uni assignment to do and it was on you guess it 5G

Well NBN is probably going to suck for me cause according to the Telstra plans I've gotten my phone currently connects to a node 600m away, instead of the closer node.

Speeds doesn't worry me too much, I want better latency and reduced packetloss if at all possible.

Internode used to be really good with my ping and no packetloss, but of late it's been bad for dropped connections...

Re: The NBN thread
Which one you connect to will depend where your phone line runs, you can get a Telstra cable map for your area via https://www.1100.com.au/ (pick excavation/manual excavation and it'll be free), and with some reading of those you should be able to trace your phone line to work out which pillar you ...

Re: The NBN thread
Well according to the roll-out plan NBN gets to me Oct-Dec of this year (2018), it will be FTTN according to NBNCo. My question is, can we choose the node we connect to :?: Near to me are 2 nodes, one is 300 meters away and one is 600 meters away... according to the node map the node that is further...
