It's probably not, and I'm sure the police would frown on carrying around a 12" rambo knife or something, but a folding pocket knife that is basically a utility? Never had any dramas!

I think the worst they could do is give you a fine and confiscate the knife, at which point I'd just go buy another - we do have cops from a few states kicking around these forums that could tell us for sure though. Another thing is that living in the country it's pretty common to see people getting around with leatherman and buck folding knives on their hips in pouches, might be a different story in a city.

Edit: Just this on Facebook (NSW Police post):
Custody of a knife in public place is an offence under the Summary Offences Act unless the a person can satisfy police or the court they had possession for a lawful purpose as described in the Act. The Act does not limit the class or type of knife and carrying a knife in a motor vehicle can constitute custody in a public place.

Sec 11C Custody of knife in public place or school

(1) A person must not, without reasonable excuse (proof of which lies on the person), have in his or her custody a knife in a public place or a school.

Maximum penalty: 20 penalty units or imprisonment for 2 years, or both.
Where that is ambiguous is what defines a reasonable excuse, and proof of which lies on the person? I work for a construction company, having a knife is handy - so if I have a knife and am wearing a work shirt, does that count as proof? And then it's up to the Cops discretion on the spot to decide if that is reasonable or not.

Really though, if you aren't being a dickhead you probably don't have anything to worry about.

Reasonable: carrying a knife/utility tool during working hours, because it's part of your job. Hell I used to have one working as a checkout dude to open boxes, cut tags.

Unreasonable: carrying a knife to a concert in the evening.

Police and the Courts will never accept self defence as a reason for carrying weapons in public.

Also keep in mind that if you're traveling overseas and have a multitool on you for legit reasons (e.g. camping) to remember where you've put it.

I had one on me after the camping part of a trip and I didn't even realise it. We were going into a night club... well, I don't need to paint the picture in full detail do I?

I'm just glad that I had a well respected local with me to talk me out of trouble. I was in Africa at the time... thought I was gonna have the sh!t beaten out of me.

Honestly, Disco has it in one. If you act like a tard and give cops an excuse to search you you'll end up with a fine or charge (depending on offence/history).

Also city vs country plays a big part. In the CBD carrying ANY knife will get you in shit, whereas noone gives a flying fuck out country.

Haha even if he was I've been carrying a knife every day for a very long time now, clipping it into my pocket is about as much a habit as picking up my phone before I leave the house and I haven't had any problems over the years. Even if I'm flying it goes into the suitcase for the trip and back in my pocket at the other side.

Fair point. One less thing to lose if you're in a situation where you don't need to take them.

How much does all that extra kit weigh?

Fairly sure it's around the 16kg mark. Technically I left out IOEV + ballistic panels. I'll weigh myself fully kitted next time I'm at work.

It's an absolute bitch when chasing someone on foot.
