SBS will now show all remaining matches.

Hopefully lessons are learnt and we don't have to go through this again in 2022.

Germany were horrid they deserved to drop out but you have to wonder how did it get to this; the first goal was just comical the 2nd was insane both in extra time but omg the poor German fans will not be happy.

and this is good news, all remaining games on SBS; good move Optus and I'm looking forward to the R-16 and hopefully plenty of penalty shoot outs :D

England game will be worth watching we'll get to see if their back 3 are up for the challenge of the stronger teams

edit: we just read the same thing :)

edit 2: looks like the England might be a fail as both teams probably want to lose :(

the world has gone mad... Germany employs the keeper as an attacking wing back lol

Eh, super common tactic, they were down a goal with a minute to go and they had the ball.... either they score with that attack or it doesnt matter anyway.

common to be at the half and pushing your defenders into attack but to have 3 of your own players behind you and then display how bad your foot skills are is hilarious; they still had a couple of plays before the whistle for me it was just reckless for the keeper to be playing as an attacking wing back.

They needed two goals to stay in the tournament. Mexico and Sweden both would be on 6 points and a draw would mean Germany would be stranded on 4 points.

yes Germany needed to win but conceding a 2nd goal gives you - zero chance; once SK had won the throw the keeper should have retreated and let his defenders win the ball, that's what defenders do; to linger was clumsy and they paid with fail.

the England game was fairly lame, good goal but not much passion to win from England and they might make it the semi's but I doubt they'll get past Croatia or spain.
Plenty of muscle on the other side of the draw, Brasil has the best path to the semi's but the other four could really play themselves into great form or tear each other apart.
either way some great football ahead :)

my list for the quarters/winners of the R16:
Argentina
Portugal
Spain
Croatia
Brasil
Belgium
Swiss
England

My list would be similar, except France to beat Argentina and Columbia to beat England (but only if James is fit).

Columbia is a definite chance and would make fun of England's desire to take the easy road... but my dream final is England v Portugal but I doubt that will happen... one has to hope :)

Two fantastic round of 16 matches - didn't think we'd see that many goals in the entire round, let alone one night. And the quality of some of those goals were just sublime! (Pavard's goal possibly the goal of the tournament so far.) No complaints in either result, France and Uruguay genuinely looked the better sides and deserved their wins.

what a feast :D I watched the Portugal game live and while I was sad to see Portugal out it was a great game wasn't over till it was over just kept on giving. Uruguay played really well and deserved the win, their defensive structure looks pretty good and their second goal was awesome.

Then I watch the replay of the France match and that was just as good, Pavard's goal was magic but Argentina kept on coming; France really stepped up from the group stage and look very good with a lightening attack. France v Uruguay should be a stunning match up.

and we go again tonight; I'll watch the Croatia match and then the replay of the Spain match, I expect both those teams to win but who knows I'm zero to two atm lol

right back ftw :)

Wish I had the time to watch the games tomorrow - start at a new workplace and have to be there at 9am for orientation. Unfortunate, but I think they're two of the weaker Rof16 matches so I don't mind too much.

that was a ripper and a saved penalty to go to penalties... magic. the game was pretty lame though especially the 2nd half, very defensive midfield play and slow, france would tear them apart.

currently watching the replay of spain v russia and it's much better quality. I only got out bed to watch the penalty shootout after checking the score on my phone at about 2.30am... glad I did... 2 shootouts in one night brilliant :D

Russia had amazing defensive structure 5 at the back in a zone defence and they stuck to their task; spain barely got behind them or through them and their possession game just was working against such stoic defence and they just didn't try anything different, their only goal was a lucky own goal and really didn't deserve to win.
The russian keeper had a great game and won the match with that left foot save.
that leaves me 1 from 4 :(
Brasil Mexico match should be a good one, I'll watch that on replay though I will check my phone again just in case we get another 2.30am penalty shootout.
Belgium should beat Japan so I'll get some sleep and look to the England game for my next live.

I'll have to watch what I can of the Brazil vs Mexico game before work. At most I'll probably have an hour, so the fast forward button is my friend.

I'd like to see Japan win tomorrow, but I really want Belgium to win the World Cup, so I'm a bit torn for the other game. Will hopefully get to watch highlights once I get home tomorrow.

Well I certainly picked the wrong game to watch. Brazil vs Mexico was okay, but watching the Optus 'mini match' of Belgium vs Japan was amazing. Heartbreaking for the Japan at the end, but what an action packed goalfest the second half was!

the 2nd half was good but Belgium didn't really start playing until they were 2 goals down, that's when the game came alive. I started watching around 5.15am when I noticed on my phone that Japan were 2 goals up so decided to get up and watch and it was worth it. Japan were unlucky not to get to extra time Belgium's 3rd was in the last seconds but I think Belgium would have won in extra they had Japan under great pressure as the game went on.
I didn't see the 1st half but reports indicate that only the Japanese goals stood out.

I enjoyed the Brasil match, nice to see goals scored inside the 6 yard box and the Brasil front 4 have some real skill and class, great to watch I just wish Neymar would stop rolling around on the ground like his leg has been chomped off by a shark does nothing for his game.
Mexico played well and stretched Brasil but didn't have the directness on goal that Brasil does. The Belgium Brasil match will good.

2 good matches tonight and I'll watch the England game live and replay the other.

epic game... ENGLAND !!

epic knife fight the Colombians fought hard, very hard and their blade almost pierced the English heart missing by millimetres, literally a win by millimetres.
England didn't impress me, their back 3 looks more like a back 5 and penetration in attack was fairly weak. the penalty they scored from was pretty marginal but they held out until the 93rd minute when Colombia scored a stunner to take it to extra time.
If the Swedes bring their battleaxes it could end like 1066, England will need to be better in attack to defeat them.

so Quarter winners:
Uruguay
Brasil
Sweden
Russia

:)

For me:
France
Brazil
Sweden
Croatia

Disappointed that all the good teams got stuck in one half of the draw. I hope Belgium can win the WC, though I think it'll be tough for them to overcome Brazil and the winner of France vs Uruguay.

As for viewing habits, taping both games and will watch when I get up. Both of tonight's matches should be top quality.

I thought Brasil were unlucky but you need luck in the World Cup, they certainly had many opportunities in the 2nd half and a penalty but Neymar's antics probably didn't help. high quality game though possibly one of the best this world cup.

France were definitely the better team and deserved the win though Uruguay were also unlucky.

another night of total football... more coffee and grappa :D

Perhaps unlucky, but Courtois had a blinder. That shot he saved from Courtinho was epic. France vs Belgium is the best of Europe (this tournament) so it should make for a classic semi final. Pity it canter be the final, but if Croatia keep playing the way they have been, I'll have no complaints.
