Farewell, games.on.net

Post by NewsBot » 07 Nov 2015, 20:25

Long-running Australian gaming website games.on.net has officially been axed by parent company, TPG, one of the country's largest ISPs. The news comes following a financial review that determined gaming content "does not fit into the future plans for the iiNet Group".

You know I shed a tear when I read the closing announcement. GoN was always awesome and I'm seriously going to miss it.

I struggled to read it... was a site that I have enjoyed going to and slowly becoming a bigger part of the community over the years
I think I made the majority of my posts within the last 2 or 3 years

game servers will remain active until “sometime in 2016”
Or until a patch comes out and they need updating....

Mug, the silly buggar is still updating them in the background even though he doesn't have to. If he hadn't, TF2 at the very least and maybe some of the other Steam based games would already not be working as they had an update on Saturday and if the servers need to rely on iiNet staff to update them then expect them to be offline soon.

TPG will think it looks better for them if they are just closing stuff that no one uses...

i said that to mug the other day, if the servers dont get updated and people stop using them, then TPG can just say "oh well everyone has jumped ship may as well shut them down"

I think it's safe to say that TPG has their bottom dollar in mind, and that game servers cost them more money than they think they can make.

Sad but true, GoN will always be somewhere that I remember as a great community for a long time, it's no different than a pub that has closed down or something :(

I think they'd have killed it even if it was self sustaining. The little money they could potentially make off it probably isn't worth the effort compared to their other massive money makers.

Same, I just started out reading the site once a day, then checking it whenever work was quiet, then made an account to comment on stories, then ended up in the forums, its still sitting at the top of my most visited sites when I open a new tab in chrome.

TPG and servers lol, I did my last Battlefield server update the other day, even ignoring server setup request now from players.

Oh well, the profits of the few outweigh the needs of the many.

I'll say this. I've been playing on the games.on.net sites for a couple of years and been an internode customer for at least 10. I'm gutted. But hey thanks to all the admins and the guys at node who did such an awesome job! I'm so upset about this I even considered starting my own ISP. That is, until I saw the NBN terms and conditions for ISPs...

It's a hard habbit to break, client updates or email from Valve, open TC Admin and update the servers.

Must Resist.. :geek:

Yes Internode/games.on.net got me through some very dark days in my past having something to do to distract me, just sad to see it go.
