Been playing Steamworld Heist from the latest humble bundle. It's not the sort of game I'd normally buy, but it's been well worth the dollar I spent on it.

Getting back into EUIV and wow, they constantly evolve this game.

What the hell are estates? Why are they demanding control of my territory? Why are my only options for Estates to support them or do anything other than provide them with more territory?

What on earth are these Ages? If you don't do a thing by a certain time then you suffer fairly extreme penalties... and my thingy was to turn Protestant... but I'm playing Qara Qoyonlu, a Sunni nation.

Qara is an interesting start. I was immediately able to declare war on Georgia and wiped them off the map and while doing so saw the Ottos at war with Kazan (as always). I had 20k troops which is a good way to start any game, but the Ottos were already rolling 40k troops deep. Jesus.

Next up I'd developed a Spy Network in Trebizond and was about to roll them (they spy network is new, a seemingly pointless mechanic that forces you to build the network then spend 20% of it on each fabricated claim)... until the peasants took up arms across the country and swiftly ended my otherwise excellent start.

See, the Qoyonlu start with nothing but hate on their borders. Everyone hates your religion, the Timi's hate you, the Mamluk's hate you, the Otto's hate you... and these are some pretty serious neighbours. Your culture is Iraqi and your faith is Sunni and you can't convert shit. If my ruler hadn't died, causing my stability to drop which then increases national unrest by +1, I might have made it out and been able to smash Trebizond giving me a decent foothold to then navigate a 20 year stretch of peace to rebuild for... I'm not sure really, just pushing out the borders to form Iraq at some point I guess... would have been nice to bloody the nose of the Timmies... or anything else that didn't get me noticed by the Ottos.

Such an incredible game.

EDIT: Estates were added in the Cossacks DLC. They confer bonuses in several ways if they're loyal and when they need more territory you do it through the provincial build screen. This confers yet more bonuses but adds to autonomy in that province (which then affects trade power). It's a very delicate balance.

As for Ages, each age lasts for 90 years and if you manage to complete all three bonus objectives during an age, you enter a 50 year Golden Age conferring;

–10% All power costs
+10% Morale of armies
+10% Morale of navies
+10% Goods produced modifier
+5 Maximum absolutism

Might be time for a new EUIV thread.

Jesus christ... Qara is a HARD start. New game, vassalised Georgia this time to keep costs down and pumped some admin into Stabilty to reduce unrest which worked beautifully with only two simple uprisings that I was able to put down. Increased Piety to improve my missionary strength but it was still taking me 45 months to convert each province of the 20+ that weren't happy to be part of my nation.

Improved my tech, added in some tax offices and improved base taxation on some of the bigger areas like Bagdad... this finally got my Ducat income into the +0.0X territory but that was with my armies set to lowest maintenance. This becomes important later.

Mothballed all my forts but for the one on the border with the Ottos who had already eaten Dulkadir. Diplomatically annexed Shirvan and at this point Georgia had come around to my way of thinking so I had two very happy vassals and the Golden Horde Khanate to the north were ready to ally (and I'm maxxed on diplomatic slots so I had to drop Crimea who had been good friends so far). I'd worked on the Timmies for years so they were now friendly and so revolt-ridden that I had to expend an unhealthy amount of my manpower keeping the Persian Rebels away from my land.

So things are good, I'm very close to popping my first Idea slot and I'm thinking Humanist is the only one that makes sense as it improves unity, reduces unrest and improves tolerance of heretics. All very valuable given how volatile the country is.

At this point, the Ottos declare war on me and the lime-green steam roller starts up. I pump my army maintenance back up (causing me to immediately take out my 9th loan) and head into battle. They of course have a 2-star general against my 1-star, and while I'm waiting for my troops to refresh they attack me. 22k against my 19k with Georgia adding another 5k in support. Even with a minus 2 to their dice rolls (I'm in the mountains) they're doing okay... and then their rear-echelon shows up and suddenly they have 39,000 troops against my now combined 19,000.

Exciting stuff. I'm a fan of the QQ's so I'm determined to get this start right.

The beauty of EUIV is in the tooltips. Nothing happens without allowing you to backtrack why it occurred and how you can influence it (except for Estates). It's seriously brilliant in that regards... everything become obvious if you just take the time to read what it's putting up.

Tells some frickin' great stories too.

I really fucking hope that 'Operation Health' in R6 Siege unfucks the near impossibility of me playing more than one full game a night (on both pc and xbox). I'd be a hundred hours deep by now if it would work for me.

Pillars of Eternity - Loving it so far (granted I'm not very far into it). But the story telling, voice overs, and the actual idea is all awesome. Gameplay reminds me of the older isometric RPG's which I loved.
Even on the easy setting I am noticing that my monk is a little under-powered in fights, thinking of restarting as someone more akin to front line fighting. (As all the NPC's I have found so far seem to be ranged specialists.)
Trying to decide now which way to go... Fighter, Paladin, Ranger or Barbarian

I've kinda got a confession to make... I've finally discovered Reddit.... and it's slightly perfect for me. Lots of individual spaces to crap on about games, but it does lack the community that you all bring. Thinking I'll double time PA and Reddit for my game-vomit needs :D
.
Yeah, I've moved over to reddit just recently. Pretty much where I'll be these days.

It's pretty much many, many, many forums (called subreddits) all under one roof, covering any topic you can imagine. Search out and follow the ones you enjoy, or easily create your own. Vote system on comments also does a pretty good job of weeding out the idiots.

EDIT - And your home page gives you a feed from all the subreddits you are subscribed to (based upon things like "hot", "new" or "controversial" etc), or you can look at a feed of what is popular across reddit currently.

As Ken has said, if you have an interest in.. say... gaming, you could go to www.reddit.com/r/gaming ...If you were a cop you could sign up to www.reddit.com/r/LEO and bitch about the general public...Thrifty gamers? Got you covered @ www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/

So you set up your user account and start subscribing to different subreddits, then when you have a nice collection you can just visit reddit.com and it shows your 'front page' which is a collection of your subreddits.

Want to find more subreddits? Go visit reddit.com/r/all to see the most popular at that point in time.

Thats about my summary.

Vanquish comes out in 4 days!

For those who've never had a console (or, well, never played Vanquish) you might just fucking love this. It's from Platinum Games (Madworld, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revenbeance, Bayonetta 2, Nier Automata, the sadly cancelled Scalebound) and it's fucking mental. There's a button press assigned to smoking a cigarette and flicking the butt to distract snipers.

Seriously crazy, high-paced action.

Jumped further into Pillars last night... wow the stories this game tells. Lots of reading, but very enjoyable reading.
Love being able to walk up to characters and find out their backstory. Some of them are hilarious, others are sad.

Also enjoying the way lots of the story is told by spirits as you wander about, you have to walk everywhere and look everywhere if you want the most from the game. So far I can see this is a game that I will be playing for months, and slowly working out the story. Nothing to run through quickly though.
Makes a nice pace change after playing PUBG and HotS
