Is there a way someone could "borrow" a back up copy of the forum database and just upload it to another one, maybe on there way out?

Won't happen, there's way too much private information (email addresses, etc) for that to be acceptable.

Yea if it weren't totally illegal I'd love to hijack the database and see what could be salvaged... but no online community is worth the kind of trouble that would/could land one in.

Should the gaming forums be divided by PC/Console or rather the genre? e.g. FPS, RPG, MMO, RTS/TBS, Everything Else? Just thinking of the imminent release of some cross-platform titles like Fallout 4, Battlefront and COD.

Maybe a "New Releases" category, with individual forums for big name releases? Merge them into their respective genre if/when discussion dies down? Definitely not suggesting the mountain of individual game forums GON has had.

Not new releases, this will get dated quickly your better off sticking to genre to be safe. A full blown mirror of the topics that GON has might be a good starting point and what ever doesn't have something in it after a month could be removed..... maybe.

different consoles ... makes grouping with other people easier.

On board with "new releases" category though have a mega thread for each game and if it looks like the community size will justify it give it its own sub forum

Personally I'd like to see by genre of game, but that is just one opinion. It is one of the changes at Gon that disappointed me, when they removed all those categories for gaming. It was like taking a filing cabinet and removing all the dividers.

Genre sections would be good I think. Probably not worth splitting into PC/Consoles as there are so many cross platform games these days.

I'm thinking the game forums will be split by genre (which is also a kinda nebulous concept). That's how I remember them being on GON, back in the day.

The genre/platform divisions really only matter if it starts to get crowded anyway. Just thought that might be a better fit for here.

Completely agree, it was the only change to GoN in my entire time there that I really disagreed with. Genre forums are a no-brainer to me.

I always prefer a less is more approach when it comes to forums.

My perfect set up would be Gaming, Off Topic and Community, but the current set up is good.

I always feel that sub dividing forums in to tens or hundreds of subforums leaves the place feeling spread apart and somewhat dead. Plus you end up with pockets of forums where people are very much segmented off and don't interact much with other parts.

Just remember to put the game name and platform in the title, or keep discussion of a game to a main Official Topic or OT and you can just check back there for any discussion relating to it.

From there you can use subscriptions to keep track of any threads you have been posting in.
