The RetroN5 is something you need in your life

Post by Jimmy_The_Geek » 12 Nov 2015, 08:22

See this? This is a history lesson. This here little box plays every 8-16 bit cartridge ever made (Converter needed for Master System games). It's done by running an emulator that takes it's rom from the cartridge inserted into it. I am going to buy one as soon as I can afford it. So your Sega Megadrive just won't boot? RETRON5! Can't find a SNES but still want to play your copy of Link's Awakening? RETRON5!

As if this wasn't cool enough, it has ports for all the classic controllers! Seriously guys this thing is just, so great

I read about something like this a couple of years back, but they were also traveling in a bit of hot water for allegedly using emulator code that wasn't theirs. Not sure if it is the same mob, with an earlier version, but if this is still kicking along then something must have been worked out. A very interesting idea!

I bought one and it caught on fire. No shit. I was so excited for this thing and it ended up being snake oil.

The short story is it kind of works.

The long story is: they used code they don't own and now they can't provide updates cause they broke the law got caught and now the whole product lives in a realm of unknown. It doesn't play cartrages, it reads them and creates a rom and executes from that, causing some small compatibility issues.

Oh and it catches on fire. Speaking of which any electrical engineers in Sydney interested in repairing a slightly smoking game system?

I remember hyperkin. They tried to go on reddit about their Smartboy thing and got slaughtered in the comments because they are total dickbags, apparently.

EDIT: Here is the code stealing debacle Juice was talking about ... iolations/
