Ipad or Surface 3

Post by kharis » 29 Dec 2015, 21:16

Looking to get one or the other soon both are around the 600 mark ( i know i have to get the stylus and keyboard for the surface as well)

does anyone have the surface 3(not the pro)? is it capable of playing any type of game? sorta leaning this way so i can use it as a quasi graphics tablet as well

Please note this advice is wrong and is now being replaced with the dodgy smiley to represent the nature of the advice.

They're really different classes of device so it's not easy to compare them and which you should buy depends on what you actually want and need to use it for. Also I don't agree with Disco's assertion that the Surface Pro is too expensive for what it is. It's a 2-in-1 device; you're basically buying a laptop/tablet hybrid. If you need something super lightweight in a tablet form factor (for note taking or sketching, for example) while also needing to run resource demanding desktop applications, it's very hard to look past the Surface Pro in my opinion. You certainly won't be doing that with an iPad.

If you just want a tablet though, an iPad is a much better investment.

DISREGARD ALL MY ADVICE.

hehe ok matty,

been pondering this for a bit and will go with the surface for these reasons...

i can draw on it (or attempt to) directly into photoshop
steam!!! obviously wont be playing fallout on it but stuff like FTL and pointy clicky games should hopefully run
office (a better version than the ipad one)
i can sell my mac book pro which i only use in bed at the moment so cash back :)
my son has an ipad so if i need a fix there is one available :P
i can grab the keyboard later (i have a wireless one i can connect if i need to to start off with)

The Surface 3 is a good device, I've had mine for about 3 months and use it constantly for work. Definitely don't regret buying it.

It runs office and all similar programs absolutely fine (of course!), but you won't get much gaming out of it. I've played a little bit of FTL with mine and it seemed to run fine, though anything 3D (even quite old games) will start to struggle. There are multiple videos of people stress testing them on youtube if you want to see what performance is like on different games.

I think you'd be ok with photoshop so long as you aren't doing anything too intensive with it. I'm pretty sure there are youtube stress tests of people running photoshop to do light photo editing and it was able to handle it.

For these uses, yeah, I'd get the surface.

I don't have the surface but do have an Acer Switch which I chose because of the Windows environment. If you're planning on doing any office work, be sure to stick to Windows. OneDrive works well enough for cloud storage between my desktop, Switch and Windows Phone.

Assuming you're not using Office 365, be sure to remember that Office 365 Home can install on up to 5 PCs, and 5 Tablets and 5 Phones. If you have that many devices, that $120/yr works out pretty cheap.

You also get a free year subscription with the surface 3, which is a nice bonus.

Its hard to suggest as they're really quite different classes of device. The Surface3 is a small but proper computer in tablet format. The iPad is a toy.

The stylus is looooooong overdue. I've got one with my 5-yo Asus Eee-Slate (pre-surface anything) and its brilliant. Its probably helpful that the Asus is a proper Wacom digitizer graphics tablet embedded in the screen but still!
Games will likely stuggle but photoshop runs pretty well. I don't use the Ee-Slate as my main workhorse but its incredibly useful to fire up with the pen when necessary. x86-64 FTW!

As I said above not going to put too many games on it probably stuff like adventure capitalist and ftl type of games. Stuff I would have on an iPad anyway :)

The only real downside is it makes you want a proper tablet & pen for photoshopping on the big rig :D

Stumbled across this when I was checking to see if we already had a Win10 for gaming thread.

In my new-ish job I now use a Surface! Unfortunately, it has Win8.1 on it rather than Win10... every time I want to bring up the start menu, it's not there! Annoys the hell out of me and I feel it's reduced my productivity since there's so many times I hit the "start" button and am greeted by Metro.

I wish I could... it's the problem with working for a large organisation where one doesn't have administrator rights on the computer. The IT policy is strict and unless software is verified by IT (i.e. they have control over when it updates... and if they want to put in the effort to do so), it's usually a no go with installing third party software.

Otherwise, I would have upgraded it to Windows 10 already... on a device that has both traditional and touch screen computing, Windows 10 is king.
