Windows Update Broken - Vista

Post by Treloar » 31 Jan 2016, 08:04

Windows update is broken for me.

Tried resetting IE settings, stopped WU services etc renamed catroot2 to catroot2.old & SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old restarted WU services. Currently trying to manually install the latest Windows Update Agent.

So....what exactly is or isn't happening? Are you getting an error? It's just not starting? It's not saying there's any updates?

Well I spoke too soon, not fixed, but very broken, it now just tried to download 6,289MB of 14 updates for the 12 of January... epic fail.

I have now disabled Windows Update, I guess I'll be going to Linux sooner rather than later...

Microsoft have a trouble shooting utility, maybe give that a try.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/971058

There's a version for Win7, 8 & 8.1 and another for XP & Vista.

My mate had WU on Win7 broken (due to being turned off for over a year is the only explanation I could come up with)... I fixed it somehow. Can't remember how. I think I used a couple of microsoft's own tools and renamed some folders I believe.
Just get windows 10 bro.
