I think the benefit of chain burgers isn't that the food is amazing.. but that they're consistent, fast, and easy. Doesn't really matter where I am in Australia, or even parts of the world and I know I can get a feed that will do the job!

Yeah, there are times I still duck in Macca's when I need a quick feed and don't know the area all that well. I must admit though, burger project has been a disappointment for me. Their burgers are small and flat and the store that's convenient for me on the way home from work takes 15min to make the damn things.

The friend who I'm visiting at Melbourne didn't get all her belongings delivered to her by the removalists. By chance, a bloke who also used the same removalists posted a Google review saying he now has extra boxes belonging to other people. Both he and my friend were moving between the same states. Fingers crossed I can get a hold of this bloke and those extra boxes belong to my friend.

On the topic of consistency, I'm retracting my comment about maccas... went to get a McFlurry with the $2 deal going on and got a pissy half serving from the store down at bit from Crown Casino along the Yarra. The mexican I had tonight was OK... enchiladas was tasty but the rice was very plain and the beans tasted like baked beans.

Tomorrow night, I'm gonna go back to the HSP kebab shop for a kebab and get ice cream from the store next door like I had originally planned tonight. This whole exploring the town thing is over rated... Google reviews of 4.0 or higher is where it's at!

In the age of Trip Advisor (or even Google reviews), it's reality not hard to find good eats wherever you happen to be. There's something to the wisdom of the crowd.

Handy thing about modern smart phone based internet is that you don't have to take the safe option for maccas or whatever. Just load a reasonably popular app and the chances of finding a good local store are pretty high.

True but it's situational, if I'm away for a weekend or longer and want to really enjoy something yeah - on a whirlwind trip or just passing through, the generic fast stuff is better than the good slow stuff

This.

Too many of the places I liked the look of were closed on a Sunday night.

That and the Mexican place was rated in the the high 3's (3.7 or 3.9 from memory) and I didn't want to be standing out in the cold too much longer flicking through a smartphone at the individual reviews which had a few one start scores among them. These review sites need a quick score distribution bar chart over the past year so people can see ratings more easily.

Anyway, if I lift my expectations up to 4 stars and above when scanning the average ratings, that should hopefully thin out the duds a bit better... and hopefully they're open when I want to eat.

As for lunch today, I'm thinking...

Maybe even dinner as it's $20 steak night.

yeah there a few nice cafes around where we stay in Perth for doctors visits, but the Dome is heaps closer and they still do a decent lunch so its just easier to call in there more often then not and when we get in late theres usually a good chance that nothing will be open or its something that will take ages to prepare so we just hit up maccas on the way from the airport...

Pizza is the exception, Id rather take a gamble on a unknown local pizza place than Dominos.

Agree on the pizza... god I hate chain pizzas...
I have a good shop just around the corner from me, awesome pizzas and at a decent price.

Spent my weekend doing actual manual labour... and have come out of it less sore than expected. Sunburnt, but not muscle sore like I was expecting.
helping family clean my brothers house for a family reunion, and his block and sheds resembles a standard farm area after 50 years... Just random things around that never get thrown out because they "may" have a use one day.
They did let me loose with a nail gun though... god damn those things feel dangerous, but so much faster and easier than a hammer.

I'm with you re chain pizzas, they're so bad that we actually prefer to grab a frozen pizza over a chain pizza

Crust and Pizza Capers made adequate pizzas tbh.

We don't have Crust here, but I've never been impressed by Pizza Capers.. to me they're just sloppy and lacking in flavour, but to each their own

Pizza Capers WAS good in Brisbane when they first arrived on the scene but they've gone down hill tremendously since then. Just another Dominos now.

Lunch ended up being a $9.90 chicken Parma at the dfo. Spent too much time looking at clothes and the granola bar I had for breakfast was wearing off. I'll tackle the pub for dinner.

I've only experienced the local Pizza Capers, and that was decent. A step above Dominos / Pizza Hut at least.

I've only tried Crust twice in Brisbane and both times were disappointing. My Osteo's current practice is next to a Crust and he says the same thing. Would be interesting to see how they are in other states.

I decided not to chance finding a cafe for breakfast tomorrow with it being a public holiday at Melbourne so I bought some breakfast bars and some juice from Woolies before heading back to the hotel this evening.

Oh is that what happened, there was one near me and I ordered there a few times, then I got sick for paying 20 bucks for one pizza and found an indy place nearby that was just as good ;) :P

I don't give a toss about the Melbourne Cup, in fact I generally dislike it, but my office is pretty great with events like this. Two of the managers have brought in their spits and we are doing 4 different spit roasted meats today, with the usual wine and beer. Even got a stupid hat to wear :P

It's pretty quiet here in Melbourne at the moment but I guess that goes with it being a public holiday... and I've yet to leave the hotel room too (though normally it sounds quite lively from the room).

I check out at 11am and will have to brave the rainy weather. The only brightside is that my mobile might have half decent reception and be able to receive/send SMSes normally... if I have it charged. Forgot to turn the charger on at the wall when I plugged in the phone 30min ago. I swear half my posts are for helping me think through what I need to do.

Thankfully that's confined to the race track. The dress up infects offices all over.
