Photography Gear
Not sure there's many here that do photography with gear beyond a phone (not that there's anything wrong with that) but I figure I'd start the thread and see what comes of it.
I mainly do my photography when I travel these days. Currently, I sport two systems: My trusty Canon APS-C gear and my Nikon 1 gear... the latter I got as a lighter option for travel. I've been thinking about whether the Nikon 1 is good enough for big trips though. I've invested a bit into the setup with 10-100mm, 6.7-13mm and 18.5mm f/1.8 lenses and it does well for a nice weekend away. The 1 inch sensor is adequate for capturing shots but I only have a V1 which is 10MP and won't be so good for shots I want to blow up and hang on the wall. Not to mention the V1 has very cumbersome manual controls.
My Canon 600D (18MP) with 15-85 lens is my go to setup for anything I need a bit more megapixels for enlargement or where I feel I need to crop. But it can be a bit heavy for a 2month plus trip.
I could get myself a Nikon V2 or even V3 but since I'd need to get a whole new set of spare batteries with it, I could look into getting a whole new system during sales where I could get a body and lens for cheap. The Olympus E-M10 mk2 should be due for retirement in the next year and a half (esp once the mk4 is out) which gives me an opportunity to jump to the Four Thirds system. But then I'd probably want the Olympus 12-100mm f/4 which costs RRP$1600. I do like my wider all purpose lenses but $1600 is a lot of mulah to part with... one reason why I stuck with the V1 which I think cost me around $1000-1200 for the entire system I currently have.
Would love to get some idea if anyone has thoughts on a good travel setup (esp for remote places).

Re: Photography Gear
So... not long after considering purchasing an Olympus OM-D E-M10, there's a 15% off sale from Digidirect that brings down the price a bit. The 12-40 f/2.8 lens is also a bit cheaper too. Not the 12-100 f/4 but it'll be better for low light. Still, it's a smidgen over $1500 all up and we haven't even considered cost of spare batteries coz these things only take about 350 shots per charge.

Maybe my Nikon V1 ain't so bad after all.

Re: Photography Gear
Found a Nikon 1 V2 on sale along with spare batteries and the GPS attachment on clearance. All up, an extra $440 spent on the Nikon 1 system to give it some more manual control.
Still tempted to get the Olympus but I've found out that there's a kit with the pro 12-40 f/2.8 lens and the mid ranged OM-D model that can be had for ~$1400 during sales.
Will probably have a good play with the V2 and my current lenses first and if I feel I could do with the Olympus, I'll keep an eye on the kit's stock, save like made, and snap one up the next time there's a decent sale.
Will give me some time to decide between all black or the silver top, retro look.

Re: Photography Gear
Ended up seeing sales on the Olympus OM-D E-M10 mk2 and 12-40mm f/2.8 lens so decided to get them for a smidgen over $1100. Figured I'd save myself that $300 seeing how most of the OM-D models don't quite have the tech I want just yet. Between a funky white Nikon and an all black, metal Olympus, I'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to cameras and will have absolutely no reason to not go out shooting.

Re: Photography Gear
Nice.
I'd been thinking about getting a camera but I'd probably never have it on me when I saw something I wanted to take a good picture of so I'll probably just end up spending more on a smartphone with a better camera.

Yeah, as they say, the best camera is the one you have on you and for most of us it'll be the one on our smartphones. I still use my Lumia 950's camera a hell of a lot especially since I can take a photo and send it on.
These days, one really does have to be specifically focused on doing photography to make it worth while getting a dedicated camera and lugging it around.
Luckily for me, I do a lot of photography when I'm traveling. I like to experience my holiday but I'll still take a good quality snap when I get the chance. I also take a lot of photos for work. One thing about property analysis, an image adds a lot of value and geotagging images is invaluable when inspecting estates across a region.

Re: Photography Gear
Thought this is a very cool DSLR/Mirrorless camera bag, especially for anyone going through wet areas:
