Quit my overly stressful job (never ever work for family!!) and picked up a new one that starts next week, less money but better mental state and less sitting on my ass is always good.
Congrats on the new job, I don't think I could work for family either. Sometimes the stress of some jobs just ain't worth it, and sometimes we don't realise just how much that stress affects our entire lives until we've stepped away from it and into something else that doesn't fuck with us as much.
I know someone else who needs a new job for better mental state... not mentioning any names though (*cough* Nekosan *cough*)
Went along to my local rural fire brigade yesterday to look into maybe joining. Turns out I already know a bunch of people in it and instead of sending me away with just an application form they kitted me out with all the gear (kit bag, boots, helmet, clothes, etc) and expect me to show up to the next training.
Was a bit funny, but "they know where I live" quite literally, so not a big risk on their part and I tell you what, getting a ton of free stuff isn't a half bad recruitment tool.

I joined (and am still a member of for some reason) one of our local brigades, thought it looked really cool and wanted to get involved in the community and make some friends. Wasn't that a disaster, the place was drama central with little cliques left right and centre.
Sounds like your attempt will go better than mine!
I'm pretty sure one of our local brigades made national news for the hazing rituals they did to a young girl who joined.
Not sure what came out of it except a lot of people telling her to "harden up it was just some fun.. "

I find that sort of shit barbaric. It used to be big in mining, but we were able to pretty well fully eliminate it on the site I worked on thankfully.
It was interesting as on many mine sites there were also always mutterings that female staff got picked on a lot, whereas the site I was on was completely different, apart from the odd arrogant 'old school' cock head, it was almost like you had several hundred body guards working with you. The guys really didn't appreciate anyone who walked in and gave the female workers a hard time unless the individual female was either antagonistic OR a slut. If you were easy, you didn't get much respect.

This one seems to hold all their animosity for the SES, rather than internalising it. Which I think I'll be ok with

Just reading about East Africa during world war one and the fighting there (because thanks for consuming my day Wikipedia). The Germans lost 9000 troops and 7000 native porters. The British lost 11000 troops and NINETY FIVE THOUSAND porters.

What this tells me is that the highly mobile German infantry just used less porters...lol
Day off today to attend to some medical stuff, might squeeze in an eyebrow appointment as well... after 30+ days straight on call, and primarily flying solo at work for a similar period, a mid-week day off that isn't being deducted from my leave accruals is most welcome.
I thought about them but never got around to buying one...
Same. There are a few places I found that do them, and wasn't sure which one to pick. Then I saw that there are also wine, whisky, and gin ones too, and that just made the choice harder. And I've got more than enough alcohol at home to do that sort of thing without needing to spend more tbh.
Disco and I got a beer one, Nekosan got Cider much to Disco's disgust
Aldi have theirs being released next Wednesday, but from what I could see the Beers weren't anything to write home about (having said that, BoozeBud are tight lipped about what's in theirs)
So I opened the first two slots of the BoozeBud Beer Advent Calendar for a sneak peek to see what the quality is like, spoiler tags used so I don't ruin anyone's fun:
First one is 'Silly Season' by Hop Nation Brewing Co in Victoria, doesn't seem to be available on their website yet so not sure if it's exclusive to the Advent box or something that will pop up just before Christmas:
Second one is Bridge Road Brewery, also Victorian...
