Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
I don't believe this... less than a week after getting my PC back it's having issues again. This time, the secondary HDD where I store most of my large files is dropping off. Uplay crashed in the middle of installing The Division 2 and hasn't been able to start up since. This is messed up!

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
On the chance you have some newish parts in there, have you tried a BIOS update?

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Yeah, there's a new video card in there. There SSD is 1yr old but it's been fine over the past year. WP members think it's the HDD or mobo ports being faulty or that the cable itself is faulty:

I'm just going to take it back to Umart tomorrow and let them assess it. I don't have any spare cables to do the testing, not be able to check the various ports myself... got too much going on already.

Try not installing The Division 2 and see if that helpsMugsy wrote: ↑21 Feb 2020, 23:34I don't believe this... less than a week after getting my PC back it's having issues again. Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
That was the exact thing that my BIOS update fixed. Different symptoms, but it would not boot cleanly from a cold boot. Working fine now.
MSI Tomahawk Max and an MSI 2080 Super.

Well looks like that airbag recall is slowly getting larger... 2000 Honda CRV recalled now... this time they aren't fixing, just buying it.

Yeah? My Nissan was done 3 times, the first two replacements were also deemed faulty and recalled at a later date - at this point if I still owned it I'd just disable it.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
PC shop says the the HDD eventually started showing bad sectors. It's cactus. It's also 7yrs old so I am not surprised. Getting a 4TB WD purple drive with 3yrs warranty this time. Hopefully the rest of the rig lasts another 3yrs... knock on wood.

Nothing like copying a few hundred GBs of data to the new slave drive to test whether it's reliable or not!

Been flying solo the last few nights, going to pick up the Lagavulin 16 while it's on sale at Dan's, drop down to the pub to order Thai to order some takeaway and will visit the Whisky bar for a drink or two before heading home.
Should be a nice evening at home with the dog.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
My rig got more I/O errors so I decided to try the bios update. Something went wrong and the bios update got stuck on the mobo start up screen for an hour. Now the PC is brickedOtto-matic Reiffel wrote: ↑24 Feb 2020, 21:27That was the exact thing that my BIOS update fixed. Different symptoms, but it would not boot cleanly from a cold boot. I'm not having any luck.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
So I've been on my 13.3" laptop for the past week or so again since I bricked my desktop. Then Office 2016 started having issues where Office started doing the 'Application unable to start correctly' error. Finally managed to figure out it was one of the background services messing it up. I've disabled all non-MS background services and started enabling them one by one... found the culprit, disabled it again but the issue kept happening. I think I'll keep all those services disabled going forward. Too much dicking around.
Desktop is ready to pick up. Fingers crossed it's running OK and has no more issues.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Got the PC back... there's a few ups and downs namely:
Ups:
+ I have 4 more USB3.0 ports on the front
+ my expansion card with 2x USB3.0 ports on the back is working again
+ Running Win10 now and activated using my old Win7 key
+ the 250Gb SSD had almost 200Gb free after being nuked
+ 36 month warranty on the CPU and the mobo... pretty quiet
Downs:
- my top panel on the case isn't plugged in so I've lost 2x USB3.0 ports, 2x USB2.0 ports and the front access line in/mic ports. I don't care much for the mic port and luckily I have a line in for headphones on my speakers
- the 4 port USB hub uses 2x USB3.0 ports on the back so I really only got two more ports but just with front access... probably more important but still kinda annoying. Probably should have paid more for the non mATX mobo that I think has the extra ports... oh well
The main thing is that it's working.

Some habits are hard to break... I still like using Winamp as my mp3 player on PC. Good to see it installs and works just fine on Win10.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
I do. I never caught onto the whole iTunes thing and thus don't use Spotify, etc. Just didn't see the need to repurchase something I owned already.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
iTunes has ALWAYS been garbage, but I love Spotify. Probably the most used subscription I pay for.
I'm not sure I've ever paid for music when using MP3's.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
If I was more into modern music I would probably get Spotify. But my taste is very 80s/90s/early 2000s so I have everything I want in my MP3 collection.
Might be missing a few CDs I never ripped to MP3.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Was the same myself - until I tried Spotify at least. Most of the curated playlists I get are 60s through 80s (disco/rock/popular in Australia stuff), along with a fair leavening of Scifi/movie soundtracks.

Could use some time away from the office so badly right now that I'd lick someone that had COVID-19.
